After all the summer fun we’ve had in Charles County, it’s time to relish the cooler weather and beautiful autumnal colors! Something about this weather begs for a relaxing weekend out of town, and there’s no better place to visit than Charles County. Our county is a two-hour drive from both Baltimore and Richmond and a one-hour drive from the Washington DC area, making it the ideal place for a satisfying day trip or a rejuvenating overnight stay. Whether you come with family, friends, or on a solo trip, there’s something for everyone here. Check out some of our favorite activities to add to your itinerary!
ADVENTURE INTO OUR PARKS
The best way to capitalize on perfect fall temperatures? Spend time in the great outdoors by hiking, biking, kayaking, and more.
The Indian Head Rail Trail features a 13-mile recreational trail that traverses half the county. Formerly a railroad, this converted trail allows pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy the scenic route at their desired pace. For a family-friendly day, Gilbert Run park has all the amenities you want from lake swimming, fishing, and hiking to playgrounds, volleyball courts, and BBQ grills. Mallows Bay is a must for nature enthusiasts. This marine sanctuary located on the Chesapeake Trail allows you to fish in certain areas, search for local birds, and kayak over shipwreck remnants that date back to the Civil War. While you will need a guest pass to enter, Maxwell Hall Park is one of the best places to go horseback riding. Its 14 miles of trails are great for both novices and seasoned equestrians. Birders will love Port Tobacco Park’s beautiful walking trails and excellent observation platforms to view local wildlife. For those searching for the luxurious quiet of a golf course, the 18 holes at the public White Plains Golf Course are the perfect addition to your trip.

DISCOVER OUR HISTORY
History-lovers will have no end of sites to explore, and if you’ve never learned about Charles County’s local history, there are quite a few options to get you started.
The Historic Port Tobacco Village is a 17th-century settlement that served as the county seat and bustling seaport for over 150 years. Visit iconic sites like Stagg Hall, the 19th-century Courthouse, Burch House, the One-Room Schoolhouse, and the Agricultural Heritage Museum. The village has enough to keep you occupied all day, so consider adding it to your next weekend trip to make sure you fit in all the activities you want.
Charles County is home to many historic homes with fantastic tour opportunities. Visit the Thomas Stone House to learn more about Maryland’s youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence, and spend some time at the Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House Museum to discover a fascinating connection to the assassin John Wilkes Booth. The African American Heritage House serves as a museum and educational center for African American history, culture, and contributions in the United States.
You’ll also want to check out the Maryland Veterans Museum, which honors and celebrates the men and women who have served in the US Armed Forces, and St. Ignatius Chapel, the oldest continuously operating Catholic parish in the country.

DELIGHT IN OUR DINING
To fuel your day trip or overnight stay, you and your fellow adventurers will need some great meals. Check out the Farmhouse Café and Creperie for a delicious coffee and breakfast to get you started. For lunch and dinner, check out Blue Dog Saloon and Restaurant for classic American dining and seafood, Bollywood Masala for authentic Indian cuisine, or Galazio for a refreshing Mediterranean meal. Craving Italian? Try Il Gusto Ristorante or Bobby Rucci’s Famous Deli. Ka’ribbean Fire serves up Caribbean soul food that can’t be missed, Momi’s Kitchen offers a yummy health-focused menu, and Lefty’s BBQ packs a mouthwatering punch from 11am–6pm, Wednesday to Sunday. In between meals, grab a slice of cake at the Honey Bun Cake Factory from 11am–6pm, Tuesday to Friday. End your day with bourbon and brews at The Rad House, and stay till midnight if your trip is overnight. Several of these restaurants are closed on Mondays or weekends, so always double check they’re open before you visit!
