African American Heritage Society of Charles County

The African American Heritage Society of Charles County, Inc. is a non-profit organization with a dedicated mission to foster public awareness and understanding of the African American way of life; the culture and historical contributions of African Americans to the growth and development of Southern Maryland and the nation. Founded in 1974 by Veronica Coates and the late William A. Diggs, the Society has welcomed both local and international visitors through its doors. Additionally, the group has sponsored historical exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution as well as churches, libraries, schools, and universities throughout the state. In 1999, the African American Heritage House was purchased to serve as a museum and educational center. The house contains various artifacts highlighting the contributions of local and national African Americans, historical memorabilia, vintage appliances, housewares, and kitchen utensils once owned by locals during slavery.

The African American Heritage Society of Charles County is presently staffed by volunteers, and is open by appointment only, except for special public events. Please call the African American Heritage Society at 301-609-9099.
